{"id":27939,"date":"2024-01-22T10:26:28","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T10:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alliedforces.eu\/?p=27939"},"modified":"2024-01-22T10:26:29","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T10:26:29","slug":"review-scanner-the-cosmic-race-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alliedforces.eu\/en\/review-scanner-the-cosmic-race-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Scanner: The Cosmic Race (2024, Rock Of Angels Records)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German heavy\/power band <strong>Scanner<\/strong>, known especially for their debut album <strong><em>Hypertrace <\/em><\/strong>(Noise Records) from 1988, has been wandering around the scene since 1986, releasing albums in dribs and drabs since their formation, maintaining a certain interest within the genre but without completely emerging. Their albums manage to maintain a fairly notable level despite the fact that they are almost remembered for their debut album, which today continues to stand as one of the pillars of German heavy\/power on its own merits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His last studio album until the release of <strong><em>The Cosmic Race<\/em><\/strong> (2024, Rock Of Angels Records) was the notable <strong><em>The Judgment<\/em><\/strong> (2015, Massacre Records), which went quite unnoticed but which more than fulfilled its purpose, being also <strong>Scanner<\/strong>&#8216;s first work with the vocalist <strong>Efthimios Ioannidis<\/strong>, who returns to front the band in <strong><em>The Cosmic Race<\/em><\/strong>. There have been some changes in<strong> Scanner<\/strong>&#8216;s line-up since <strong><em>The Judgment<\/em><\/strong> was released, with only guitarist <strong>Axel \u00ab<em>A.J.<\/em>\u00bb Julius<\/strong> as the only original member since 1986 and the aforementioned vocalist since his entry in 2003, with <strong>J\u00f6rn Bettentrup<\/strong> as bassist, <strong>Dominik Rothe<\/strong> on guitar and <strong>Sascha Kurpanek<\/strong> on drums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general terms, I could say that <strong><em>The Cosmic Race<\/em><\/strong> is an entertaining album, a direct continuation of <strong><em>The Judgment <\/em><\/strong>in which the band continues on its path without deviating one bit in which musical exploration is not exactly its strong suit but it delivers just what it promises. <strong><em>Scanner&#8217;s Law <\/em><\/strong>is what one expects from a <strong>Scanner <\/strong>album, precisely what sounds closest to his first albums like <strong><em>Hypertrace <\/em><\/strong>(1988, Noise Records) or <strong><em>Terminal Earth<\/em><\/strong> (1989, Noise Records), it is the genre with which any follower of <strong>Scanner <\/strong>manages to identify the German seal at first glance. The album, however, manages to go further and breaks certain patterns without going completely out of its way with darker and calmer compositions such as the somber <strong><em>Dance Of The Dead<\/em><\/strong> in which they also incorporate riffs closer to doom with catchy melodies in a pleasantly surprising way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"SCANNER - &quot;Dance of the Dead&quot; (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3Y4NW-ZxSYI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><em>The Cosmic Race<\/em><\/strong> we also find more elaborate compositions such as <strong><em>Space Battalion<\/em><\/strong>, an epic space epic whose duration exceeds six and a half minutes with which its members break sound barriers while making us travel aboard a ship of epic power on a journey of pure heavy metal through hyperspace.
